The Birmingham Alabama Commute Nobody Warns You About

Ask anyone here what the Birmingham Alabama commute is like and you will hear about US-280 at five in the afternoon. That is one road on one bad day. The measured numbers say something far more useful, and the gap between the two is why we wrote this. We are HBH Realty Group, a top real estate team in Hoover, and this question comes up on nearly every buyer call. Here is the current data, dated and attributed.

The short version

The average one way commute is 24.1 minutes in Jefferson County and 29.5 minutes in Shelby County. The national average is 26.4 minutes. So the metro is not a hard commute by national standards, and half the suburbs people worry about beat the country as a whole.

What should drive your decision is not the metro average. It is the spread. Across the cities on a typical Birmingham shortlist, the average one way commute runs from 17.1 minutes to 30.7 minutes, and that 13.6 minute gap tracks price per square foot closely enough to be useful.

What the Birmingham Alabama commute looks like city by city

Place Mean one way commute (minutes) Population change since April 2020
Homewood 17.1 +6.4%
Birmingham 20.8 -2.3%
Jefferson County 24.1 -1.3%
Hoover 25.2 +1.1%
United States 26.4 not applicable
Trussville 26.6 +4.3%
Shelby County 29.5 +7.0%
Alabaster 30.6 +4.2%
Helena 30.7 +5.5%

Two things surprise people there. Birmingham has a shorter average commute than any suburb on the list except Homewood, and the longest commutes belong to the places growing fastest.

Minutes and dollars per square foot move together

Put those figures next to current sale prices and the trade becomes visible.

City Commute (minutes) Median sale price Median price per square foot
Homewood 17.1 $595,856 $321
Hoover 25.2 $500,000 $190
Helena 30.7 $350,168 $172
Birmingham 20.8 $177,016 $109

Commute from Census QuickFacts, 2020-2024 estimates. Prices from Redfin, three months ending August 2026, except Birmingham, which is three months ending September 2026. Accessed October 25, 2026. Prices move monthly.

Homewood to Helena is 13.6 more minutes each way and 46% less per square foot. At an identical 2,000 square feet that is roughly $642,000 against $344,000. Those are illustrative figures at matched size, not real medians, because the two median houses are not the same size, but the direction is real.

Hoover sits in the middle of that gradient on both axes, which is much of why it absorbs so much relocation volume. At 25.2 minutes it beats the national average, and at $190 per square foot it is 41% under Homewood. Our Hoover community guide breaks the city down neighborhood by neighborhood, and you can search homes across the Birmingham metro from there.

Birmingham is the exception that proves the rule: second shortest commute, lowest price per square foot, because price inside the city reflects the age and condition of the housing stock rather than distance from a job center. One caution there. Its median sale price is up 4.5% year over year while its median price per square foot is down 5.2%, same Redfin source and period. Larger or renovated homes are closing. The market has not revalued upward.

A city average can hide a 48 square mile city

Hoover's 25.2 minute average covers 48.07 square miles of land area per the 2020 Census, against 8.28 in Homewood. Close to six times the footprint, so that single average is doing a lot of work. Bluff Park and Greystone carry the same city name on the mail and do not feed onto the same roads in the morning. This is the most common mistake we see: buyers filter by city, decide the city works, and discover the corridor afterward. Tell us the office address first and the city list second.

Growth is on the longer commute side of the line

Shelby County averages 29.5 minutes and grew 7.0% between April 2020 and July 2025. Jefferson County averages 24.1 minutes and shrank 1.3% over the same period. Both are Census QuickFacts July 1 2025 estimates.

People are choosing the longer commute deliberately and in volume. That answers the question relocating buyers arrive with, whether Birmingham is shrinking, and it says something about where traffic goes next, because the Census figures cover 2020 through 2024 and trail the growth rather than lead it. Inventory is loosening at the same time: Realtor.com active listings for the Birmingham-Hoover area stood at 4,779 in September 2026 against 4,351 a year earlier, up 9.8%, per Federal Reserve Economic Data series ACTLISCOU13820.

If you are weighing a Shelby County address, the Helena community guide and the Vestavia Hills community guide cover two very different versions of that choice, and you can pull a current market snapshot for either.

One corridor changed in September 2026

Anything written about US-280 before this fall describes a different road. ALDOT opened a widened three mile section between Shades Creek Parkway and Interstate 459 on September 10, 2026, taking that stretch from three lanes each way to four as part of a $53 million project. A new Pump House Road bridge and further turn and through lanes at I-459 were still outstanding and scheduled to finish this fall. We will not publish a before and after drive time, because we have no measured one and we do not publish figures we cannot source. What we will say is that capacity there is different now than it was in August, so a relocation blog from last year is stale on this point.

What HBH Realty Group, a top real estate team in Hoover, does with this

Our office is at 5890 Elsie Road in Hoover, so the corridors in this post are the ones we drive.

  • We start from your office address, not your city list. Two addresses in the same Hoover zip code can sit on different sides of an interchange.
  • We pull the address level facts before you write an offer. County, millage, school attendance zone and current comps, every time, without being asked.
  • We will tell you when the trade is not worth it. On the figures above, 13.6 extra minutes each way runs about 115 hours a year at ten round trips a week. Sometimes the price per square foot justifies that and sometimes it does not.
  • We run the payment, not just the price. Start with our mortgage calculator, then bring us the shortlist. Staging, cleaning, painting, packing, movers, lending and title all run through the HBH Concierge Hub.

We rank consistently among the top 300 agents across the entire MLS. That is the figure behind the claim. Meet the HBH Realty Group team or read more Birmingham relocation guides.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the average commute in Birmingham, Alabama?

The average one way commute is 24.1 minutes in Jefferson County and 29.5 minutes in Shelby County, against a national average of 26.4 minutes, per U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts 2020-2024 estimates. By city on the same source: Homewood 17.1 minutes, Birmingham 20.8, Hoover 25.2, Trussville 26.6, Alabaster 30.6 and Helena 30.7.

Which Birmingham suburb has the shortest commute?

Of the cities we checked, Homewood is shortest at an average 17.1 minutes one way, then Hoover at 25.2 and Trussville at 26.6, per Census QuickFacts 2020-2024 estimates. A city average is not a promise about a specific address. Hoover covers 48.07 square miles of land area against 8.28 in Homewood, so inside Hoover the neighborhood matters more than the city line.

Does a longer commute actually buy you a cheaper house in Birmingham?

On current figures, yes, and the gradient is steep. Homewood averages 17.1 minutes and sold at a median $321 per square foot for the three months ending August 2026. Hoover averages 25.2 minutes at $190. Helena averages 30.7 minutes at $172. Commute figures are Census QuickFacts 2020-2024 estimates, prices are Redfin, both accessed October 25, 2026. HBH Realty Group, a top real estate team in Hoover, prices that trade out by address rather than by city.

Did the US-280 widening change the Birmingham commute?

The capacity changed. ALDOT opened a widened three mile section of US-280 between Shades Creek Parkway and Interstate 459 on September 10, 2026, taking that stretch from three lanes each way to four as part of a $53 million project, with a new Pump House Road bridge and further lanes at I-459 scheduled to follow this fall. We will not publish a before and after drive time, because we do not have a measured one.

Which county has the longer commute, Jefferson or Shelby?

Shelby County, by 5.4 minutes. Census QuickFacts puts mean travel time to work at 29.5 minutes in Shelby County and 24.1 minutes in Jefferson County for 2020-2024. The direction of travel is the interesting part: Shelby grew 7.0% between April 2020 and July 2025 while Jefferson shrank 1.3%, same source. The longer commute side of the line is the side adding people.
