Joseph's Table spent years in Chelsea Corners off U.S. 280. It closed in November 2024, went quiet through renovations, and this June it reopened somewhere else entirely: a former McAlister's Deli space in the North Pelham Square Shopping Center on Alabama 261. That relocation, not the opening itself, is the story worth paying attention to this summer.
Because Joseph's Table isn't the only regional operator that looked at the map and picked Pelham. Sanpeggio's Pizza, a Birmingham-area brand that started in Chelsea back in 2000, is opening its eighth location in Southgate Village near the Publix at Highway 31 and Alabama 261, taking over the former Yoe Express. Wings R King is moving into Pelham Plaza where Wok On In used to be. And Edgar's Bakery announced a $13 million manufacturing facility that will bring roughly 40 jobs into the city.
Three restaurant permits and a bakery plant in the same window is not a coincidence. It's a bet on the summer calendar that already exists here.

Pelham Assistant City Manager Justin Smith framed the pattern in a Shelby County Reporter piece as growing demand for locally owned concepts and smaller regional chains, not the fast-casual chains that used to define the AL-261 corridor. Joseph's Table is the clearest example. It's a family-owned Mediterranean bistro and bar, not a franchise, and it moved into a shopping center that was defined for two decades by chain sandwich traffic. The Fourth of July anchor is Fire on the Water at Oak Mountain State Park's Double Oak Lake on Friday, July 3. Fireworks go up at 9 PM. The rest of the day is what a lot of residents forget to plan around: beach volleyball, the fishing piers, playgrounds, watercraft rentals. Chairs, blankets and coolers are welcome; alcohol is not. And if you were planning to hike to the dam that day, don't. The Lake Trail leading to the dam at Double Oak Lake is closed all day on July 3, with alternative routes available elsewhere in the park. Pelham Police, the Pelham Fire Department, Oak Mountain State Park Rangers, and Alabama DCNR Game Wardens will all be on site.
If Fire on the Water is the marquee event, the rest of the calendar rewards residents who actually live inside the 35124:

- Vulcan Vault, Saturday, July 11, at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena. Elite pole vault competition with music and entertainment. Spectator admission is free, which is genuinely unusual for a competition of this caliber.
- Adventure Camp week two, Pelham Recreation Center, July 13–17. Ages 8 to 12. $185 for the week with lunch provided Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
- National Kidz Outdoors Indoor Pro Rodeo, Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena, July 31 and August 1. Professional rodeo inside the coldest building in town. That's the pitch, and in an Alabama July it's a real one.
The unusual thing about Pelham's summer isn't any single event. It's that Oak Mountain, the Ice Arena, the Rec Center and the Racquet Club all program independently and all program hard through July. On any given weekend a family can pick between hiking, ice skating, a rodeo, a movie on the lawn, and a run. Very few Birmingham suburbs offer that many options inside a five-minute drive.
That programming density is not accidental. Earlier this year the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association named Pelham Parks & Recreation its Agency of the Year. Both sit on the corridor that funnels traffic from Oak Mountain and the Civic Complex back toward U.S. 31 and I-65. A family leaving Fire on the Water on July 3 will pass both. So will anyone driving home from the rodeo on August 1 or Vulcan Vault on July 11.
That's why Joseph's Table left an established Chelsea address for a smaller Pelham storefront. Chelsea Corners has strong daytime traffic. North Pelham Square has event traffic on top of daytime traffic, and event traffic is what fills a Mediterranean bistro on a Saturday night. Sanpeggio's opening its eighth location here rather than closer to Highway 280 is the same math applied to pizza.
For residents, this creates a small window that's worth knowing about. Joseph's Table is open now but running dinner-only stretches in early June before its full lunch service kicks in. Sanpeggio's and Wings R King have not announced opening dates yet, according to city officials. That means the first two months of full three-restaurant operation will overlap with the busiest stretch of the Oak Mountain calendar. Expect the AL-261 lots to fill earlier than they used to on Friday and Saturday nights, particularly on event weekends.
The America 250 programming layered on top of Fire on the Water this year is a good example of what this compression looks like in practice. The city is treating July 3 as both a fireworks night and a semiquincentennial commemoration, which means media coverage, bigger crowds, and a longer post-event dinner rush than a normal Independence Day weekend.
A short answer to the "what should I do this weekend" question
If someone asked what to do in Pelham the weekend of July 10 through 12, the honest local answer this year is: Movies Under the Stars on Friday, Vulcan Vault at the Ice Arena on Saturday, an early dinner at Joseph's Table before or after, and a Sunday morning at Oak Mountain before the heat lands. Three years ago that answer would have included a drive to Chelsea or 280 for the sit-down dinner. This year it doesn't have to.
